Agile, remote companies recognize that full-time employees aren’t the only people that contribute to their success. We build our businesses alongside freelancers, contractors, and part-time employees. Everyone’s contribution matters. Because of this, many employers want to offer the same benefits to their entire team.
Remote Health, SafetyWing’s global health insurance, was built to insure every kind of worker:
full-time employees, part-time employees, freelancers, and contractors, under one global plan. Built for our members
One of our core values, “Create, don’t copy”, challenges us to choose creativity over efficiency. It inspires us to create better solutions for our users rather than trying to fit their challenges into our assumptions of what they need.
Traditionally, group insurance plans have been reserved for full-time employees only. Without company sponsorship, freelancers and contractors had to set up their own individual plans and pay about ~40% more.
In the last few years, Employer of Record companies scaled quickly as more companies switched to remote work. They started leaning on freelancers and contractors to meet the demand. The accelerated growth meant Employer of Record companies were expanding across geographies quickly, and they needed a simpler way to cover all workers globally. We expanded Remote Health to cover every kind of worker (and their dependents), for any kind of company, in 175+ countries on a single plan.
We built our product to fit our customers rather than trying to fit our customers into an existing structure. We surveyed 120 remote workers and digital nomads from 15 countries and found that:
When faced with the choice of 2 types of insurance, most (75%) want global coverage vs. a cheaper but local-only option.
Even though only half of the respondents are self-employed, more than 75% of the entire surveyed group is paying for their own insurance.
The main reasons for wanting to leave their current insurance were: limited coverage (35%), absence of global options (23%) and high cost (10%).
Feedback like this signaled that our members need global coverage that is tied to them as individuals instead of their country of residence. It also showed that employers aren’t offering enough, if any, coverage for their remote team members. We created Remote Health to make it easy for companies to offer full coverage insurance to their team, no matter their role, no matter where they are in the world.
Who we work with
Katie Smith, SafetyWing Account Manager, talks about her experience supporting the Remote Health community.
“We work with one company that has a team of contractors based across 6 countries. The company offered their team paid time off, virtual get-togethers, and mental health support. They wanted to offer health insurance but they couldn’t find an insurer that would cover their team. Since Remote Health treats their entire team equally, contractor or not, adding them all to one plan was a simple solution.
At SafetyWing, we speak to our members on a human-to-human level. This gives us a chance to get to know our members and for our members to see into our lives as well. These glimpses back and forth have developed this kind community of people, enjoying our remote lives, together.”
