A simple insurance integration for HR and freelancer platforms

Naman Mehrotra, Head of Platform API
We partner with global HR, contractor and freelancer platforms to build the future of global, remote work. These platforms work with thousands of partners to serve the needs of a growing number of diverse workers around the world. However, despite this scale, manual processes are often used to offer partners’ services to members. This is a clunky experience for members and time-consuming for platform managers.
Since manual solutions aren’t efficient or scalable, we built the Remote Health API, a simple health insurance integration for platforms.

Making healthcare benefits accessible to freelancers and contractors

Contractors and freelancers were traditionally unable to access the same healthcare benefits as employees. Freelancers were required to pay higher rates and were sometimes rejected by insurers if they were seen as too risky to insure. With the surge in remote work, HR and freelancer platforms had a chance to disrupt this.
By partnering with SafetyWing to offer freelancers Remote Health, a global health insurance plan at a group rate, platforms provide immense value to their members. This value translates to higher retention for platforms.

Overcoming stagnant tech

The API significantly decreases administrative burden. It takes time to set up traditional insurance carriers within a platform. Each provider can take dozens of hours to set up, per country, per year. Our platform partners complained that it could take up to 6 months to get set up with traditional insurance companies.
The Remote Health API replaces outdated technology that relies on manual processes.  Without a good integration, members are unable to access transparent upfront plan & pricing information, have to jump back and forth from the platform to the insurance website, and have a long and poor onboarding experience. Our API provides a seamless, native experience within the platform that simplifies the entire process.

A simple and seamless experience

Our API allows platforms to offer Remote Health to their members, enabling them to view prices, features, and sign-up without ever leaving their website. This vastly reduces the administrative workload for platform & benefits managers. Most partners integrate Remote Health into their user onboarding flows or within a separate insurance tab, although other configurations are possible.
With our most recent API release, members can now add dependents, and developers can access a portal with revamped documentation and self-serve testing in a sandbox environment.

Feedback from our partners

The Remote Health API has already made benefits more efficient and accessible for our partners.
  • “I used to spend 12+ hours per year for each provider. Accounting for the 50+ countries we operate in, we saved more than 600 hours per year that we can use to focus on more strategic priorities” - Andela
  • “We see a high conversion on SafetyWing which is offered through the API in our Perks marketplace. The rate of adoption increases month by month.” -Deel

Looking ahead

SafetyWing’s mission is to build a global social safety net, with existing products such as Nomad Insurance and upcoming products for retirement, disability and income protection. In the future, platforms will gain access to these products via our API so they can offer our entire global social safety net to their members with only a few lines of code.
Try our Remote Health API or chat with our team if you have questions or suggestions.
