How much does the insurance cost?
While the commitment is annual, we have three age bands where the monthly price is as follows (effective as of July 1, 2026):
0-18: $143 (you can add one child free of cost as long as you have two adults on the plan)
18-39: $443
40-49: $665
50-55: $875
These prices may change over the years depending on global inflation and overall plan usage. Since this is also the first plan of its kind, we will refine pricing based on data as time goes on.
What is included in the insurance?
Health: you’re insured for both routine and emergency medical care, as well as treatment for ongoing covered conditions.
Travel: disruptions like lost checked bags, trip interruptions, and evacuations from local unrest are also included.
Income: If you lose business or employment income unexpectedly due to job loss, illness, or parental leave, you can receive temporary or long-term support.
There are restrictions to the coverage such as waiting periods, lower limits, general exclusions.

How do I know I can trust this insurance?
The insurance included in Nomad Citizen is underwritten by SafetyWing I.I., a Class 3 and Class 5 international insurer domiciled in Puerto Rico. We have been around for over 8 years and served 400,000+ users. In creating the global insurance suite for Nomad Citizen, we worked with one of the largest re-insurers in the world, Gen Re, to create a sustainable plan.
What else is included in the Nomad Citizen membership other than insurance?
We designed Nomad Citizen to be a full passport to the global nomad lifestyle.
Visa assistance: we’ve simplified nomad visa applications for popular destinations, with more being added. All you need to do is upload your info and photos without ever visiting a government website.
Community: you’ll get the opportunity to meet fellow Nomad Citizens through local events as well as other initiatives soon to come.
SafetyWing card: with our prepaid debit card, members can pay for appointments and prescriptions (up to a certain limit) without having to pay out of their own pocket and wait for reimbursement.
Coming soon
Medical vault: safely store your medical documents and information, enabling secure 2-way sharing with your medical provider. Links up to the claims flow so you can pull directly from your vault without having to re-upload the same information.
Can I use this product for the health insurance part of a nomad visa?
Most digital nomad visas will require a certain coverage limit as well as coverage for preventative/routine care and hospitalizations. Our plan has a limit of US$1.5 million and covers check-ups in addition to major treatments for things like cancer.
We’ve tried to create a plan that meets the requirements of most digital nomad visa programs; however, each visa has its own rules, so always check the official government or immigration website for the most accurate and up-to-date requirements.
Will the price go up over time?
Insurance prices can change due to various factors, such as inflation, rising healthcare costs, or coverage updates. We aim to keep increases as small and infrequent as possible while still maintaining high-quality coverage. Your price is locked in at sign-up for 12 months and will only update at renewal.
How does the tax work if I get a nomad visa?
We can’t give you any tax advice. It is dependent on your visa and where you have residency (if any).
Can I write off the monthly price of this insurance on my taxes?
Possibly. In many countries, people can deduct the health insurance portion of their premium, but rules vary depending on where you live. We recommend checking the tax regulations in your country or asking a tax professional for advice.
What is the business relationship between SafetyWing and Plumia?
Plumia is a non-profit organization working on global mobility and diplomatic initiatives. They are our partner in offering the Nomad Citizen membership.
The insurance product included in Nomad Citizen is offered exclusively to members of Plumia, other sponsoring organizations and the SafetyWing Special Purpose Trust located in Puerto Rico. SafetyWing (Managing General Agent), Ltd, a Turks and Caicos registered managing general agent, is the producer and plan administrator for certain insurance products underwritten and offered by SafetyWing Insurance I.I., a Class and Class 5 Puerto Rico domiciled international insurer. Certain non-insurance services and administrative functions are provided by SafetyWing Benefits, LLC, a Puerto Rico Limited Liability Company.
What family features are included in the plan?
Maternity care and parental leave coverage (waiting periods apply)
Income payouts for your family in case of death or catastrophic injury
Add your partner or children to your plan, even if they don’t meet the income requirements
Coverage for children includes the same health coverage for things like screenings and vaccines, as well as parent accommodation if your child is hospitalized. Children under 18 cannot access income protection.
Your spouse, even if they don't meet income requirements, can qualify for income protection after the relevant waiting periods. Note that they will never be paid out more than the amount they were earning averaged over the last 12 months before losing their income.
Am I eligible for this insurance?
In order to be eligible for the insurance, the primary member must be:
Be between the ages of 18-55 inclusive at the time of application
Be currently working and earning at least US$4,000/month (including employment or self-employment) at the time of application
Planning on being outside of your home country or passport country for at least 6 months this year
We will perform a brief medical screening to check that you are not currently planning or undergoing any significant medical treatment.
Do I always have to earn over US$4,000/month to keep this product?
No, the income requirement just has to be met when you apply. If your income decreases below this point, we will adjust any payout according to the amount you were making before the income loss, up to a maximum of US$4,000 a month.
What if I am not working right now but I will in the future or was working in the past?
You must be currently working and earning income either from employment or self-employment in order to be eligible for the insurance included in Nomad Citizen, particularly to access the income protections (i.e., there must be income to protect). If you will be working in the future, you can apply once you have received payment for the work and meet the minimum income threshold across a 12 month period.
When and how can I cancel the plan?
If you cancel within the grace period (30 days of your start date)
You'll get a full refund, no questions asked.
If you choose to cancel after the grace period
For annual prepaid plans, you can choose the date you'd like your coverage to end. We'll calculate your refund based on the number of days remaining on your plan. After that date, we’ll refund 65% of the unused portion.
For plans paid monthly, your coverage will continue through the end of your current paid billing period, and we won't charge you again after that. There's no partial refund for the remaining days in that cycle.
Refunds are processed back to your original payment method.
You'll get a confirmation email once your cancellation is effective.
If you're in the middle of treatment when your plan ends, your coverage for that treatment ends too. Any treatment after your plan's end date would not be covered, even if it started while you were still on the plan.
Can I add family members, and when can I add them?
You can add immediate family members to your plan, including one child free of cost as long as you have two adults. Family members don’t have to meet income requirements, but they will still need to pass the medical screening and meet the age requirements. You can add family at signup or within 30 days of signing up, or after a qualifying life event such as a new baby or marriage.
If my spouse makes less than US$4,000/month, can I still add them?
You can still add your spouse even if they are making less than the minimum income requirement. To access income protection, they must still be working and earning some income. Any payout will be calculated according to their average income over the last 12 months.
How can I switch from my current SafetyWing plan to this one?
If you are on a Nomad Insurance Essential subscription plan, you can stop your plan anytime before your start date for this insurance.
For all other plans, please get in touch with Customer Care via live chat.
We will honor any waiting periods you have already fulfilled for maternity care.
We recommend you sign up for Nomad Citizen first to ensure you pass the medical screening, then stop or cancel your current plan.
Where am I covered?
As a Nomad Citizen, the insurance covers you anywhere you live, work or travel in the world, except for residents of Puerto Rico or any claims/incidents that occur in Puerto Rico. This is due to restrictions from our insurance carrier being licensed there. Keep in mind also that we cannot send reimbursements or direct payments to banks or providers in sanctioned countries.
Are there any waiting periods?
There is a 1-year waiting period to access maternity care and 36 months for HIV and AIDS care under the Health section of the plan.
Waiting periods for income benefits range from 1-3 consecutive years of coverage. They help us make sure the benefits are used for truly unexpected needs, not pre-planned time off or existing situations. This keeps the system fair and sustainable.
Medical leave - 1 year
Unexpected loss of income - 2 years
Parental leave - 3 years
Long term support - 3 years
Does income protection only work if I get fired or does it work in other cases?
While only specific scenarios are covered, we tried to encapsulate a broad range of events that could lead you to having temporary loss of income. This could be getting fired, losing a contract, having a baby or getting sick for a long time. Taking a sabbatical, a prolonged vacation or undergoing education/training are not valid reasons for receiving income benefits. Income benefits have waiting periods.
Medical leave - 1 year
Unexpected loss of income - 2 years
Parental leave - 3 years
Long term support - 3 years
Can my waiting periods carry over if I am already on a SafetyWing product?
We will honor waiting periods for maternity care that have already been fulfilled for equivalent coverage on another SafetyWing product such as Nomad Insurance Complete or Remote Health.
How do you handle different income situations, like if I’m self-employed or run an LLC?
As long as you are earning income in some form, whether that's from employment or running your own business, you can qualify for income protection. The main requirement for being paid is that you are able to prove that the circumstances around your loss of income were out of your control. We will review each claim on a case-by-case basis.
How do I use my plan?
1. Use your SafetyWing debit card (for health expenses under $500)
With the card, pay for covered medical expenses up to $500 without paying out of your own pocket and skip the reimbursement wait. Then, simply upload your supporting documents to the auto-generated claim in your dashboard. Your card limit is reset when the claim is approved. For more details, check out our SafetyWing card FAQ (disregard the stated limit of $250 on this page).
2. Pay first, then claim reimbursement
Pay for the service yourself and submit a claim on the SafetyWing website or app. You have 180 days after the covered event to file a claim.
3. Have us arrange or coordinate coverage
Contacting us is required for certain claim types, such as hospitalization-related coordination, emergency medical transport, and some specialized benefits, and strongly recommended for health expenses over $1,000.
Travel warning notices
If a travel warning is issued for the area you are located while abroad, you are covered for the cost of evacuation by the most economical means possible to either your home country, a safe country that is nearby, or a location that is otherwise reasonable (e.g., you have family members located there).
Important conditions:
The start date of your active insurance period was before the travel warning was issued.
There was no travel warning in place when you arrived in the area.
You evacuate the area within 10 days of the travel warning being issued. (We acknowledge that this may be difficult given the airspace situation. We recommend you book the first available flight out to guarantee your safety.)
You will need to provide the following documentation:
Proof of you being located in the area of the travel warning (e.g., visa page, accommodation, etc.)
Tickets and receipts for the evacuating transportation
Travel warning update -- Middle East Conflict (updated on 4 March, 2026, 13:37 UTC)
Due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the US, the US Department of State and UK FCDO have issued new travel warnings for several countries in the region. Where these new warnings are in place, you may be eligible for the Evacuation from Local Unrest benefit if you are affected.
Current travel warnings:
Bahrain (28 February, 2026)
Kuwait (1 March, 2026)
Qatar (1 March, 2026)
Israel (1 March, 2026) [The benefit would only apply to regions that did not previously have a travel warning before this date (e.g., evacuation from the West Bank or Gaza Strip, among other regions, would not be covered).]
Jordan (2 March, 2026)
United Arab Emirates (2 March, 2026)
Cyprus (3 March, 2026)
Oman (3 March, 2026)
Saudi Arabia (3 March, 2026)
What is SafetyWing?
SafetyWing’s vision is to create a global social safety net so that opportunity and freedom aren’t determined by where you live or work. We want a future where everyone can access a safety net regardless of where they were born.
It’s important to us that the information we provide about our coverage and benefits is clear and transparent. You can find these details in our policy terms, Certificates of Coverage, and this FAQ. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out via our 24/7 live chat in the bottom right hand corner of this page.
How does SafetyWing provide global coverage?
SafetyWing is licensed as an international insurer but also works with other regulated insurance carriers and licensed partners to make coverage available internationally. Our structure allows us to provide coverage to globally mobile individuals and distributed companies while operating within applicable regulatory frameworks.
Simply speaking, it means that SafetyWing is a recognized international insurer and can provide coverage for you in 180+ countries.
What does that structure look like?
The insurance coverage is provided by regulated and licensed underwriting entities. The underwriting entity for each product is clearly disclosed in the policy terms and in the Certificate of Coverage issued to our members.
For example:
SafetyWing Insurance I.I. is a Puerto Rico-domiciled international insurer (Classes 3 & 5)
Certain health benefits are underwritten by VUMI®, a Puerto Rico-domiciled international insurer, administered by VIP Administration Services LLC, and offered in partnership with SafetyWing
You can see more details on Puerto Rico’s Department of State website.
All that said, SafetyWing handles all aspects of product design and customer service and support ourselves.
Why is the insurer based in Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico provides a regulatory framework for international insurers so that, with our partner carriers, SafetyWing Insurance I.I. is able to offer insurance designed for people who live, work, and travel across borders.
What does underwriting mean?
A licensed insurance company is financially responsible for the policy it underwrites and the claims covered under it. The underwriting insurer is the entity that ultimately bears the insurance risk.
What does your claim process look like?
Claims are reviewed based on the policy terms. What’s covered depends on the plan you choose and whether you meet the policy requirements, which are laid out in your policy document.
When you file a claim, we ask for supporting documents like receipts or medical records. We try to keep this straightforward, but what we need depends on the situation. We must do this to make sure everyone is being covered fairly, under the same terms.
The most common reasons claims get denied: the condition existed before your coverage started (pre-existing conditions aren't covered on our travel medical plan), or we didn't receive the requested documentation to verify the details of your claim.
How are claim disputes handled?
When a member disagrees with a claim decision, we’ll review the case under your policy terms and conditions. Members can appeal a claim decision up to 2 times. Each appeal is handled differently and reviewed by different teams, to ensure objectivity.
If, after 2 appeals, we are unable to reach a resolution, members can choose to involve an independent third-party provider to help resolve the matter. This does not cost anything for the member. You can learn more about the provider here.
Always check your policy document for the applicable dispute resolution options and procedures.
How does SafetyWing work with ambassadors and partners?
We want to make products that are so good that people will tell their friends about it, and we believe that is better than widespread, non-targeted advertising. So we work with ambassadors, partners and communities to share information about our products designed for people living internationally.
Partners help introduce our services to relevant audiences, but coverage terms, eligibility and claims decisions are always determined based on a member’s specific policy terms, regardless of whether the member was referred by an ambassador or found us on their own.
